Wasps’ Nests
What you need to know!
There are a number of different species of wasp currently living in the UK, and at this time of year they are really beginning to make their presence felt.
They build their nests wherever the queen managed to find a sheltered spot, whether this is in a hole in the ground, a hollow tree, hanging inside a leafy bush, or even in the fabric of your house. They are especially common inside loft spaces.
The nests are made from a paper like substance, and can grow to over a metre across. A nest of that size would be likely to be home for many thousands of workers, all of whom can sting repeatedly.
If you are unlucky enough to inadvertently disturb a nest it is likely that you would be stung repeatedly by a large number of them. When it comes to wasps discretion is the better part of valour.
We strongly recommend that you do not attempt to treat wasps nests yourself, without the proper equipment it is extremely dangerous.
Wasps are attracted to light, as well as movement, and as the summer progresses will become more and more focussed on sweet drinks and food and will be more of a nuisance.
