All about bedbugs

What you need to know!

Once associated only with dirty and unhygienic living conditions, bedbugs are becoming an increasingly common problem throughout the western world.

We currently receive far more requests for help with bedbugs than we did ten years ago, as increasingly mobile populations enable this unpleasant pest to spread from one country to the next with ease.

Bedbugs

Bedbugs are flattened brown insects ranging in size from tiny up to 6mm long depending on their age and maturity. Bedbugs do not spread diseases but they can interfere with your sleep and some people get a nasty reaction to the bite.

It is pretty horrible to think that ‘things’ come out at night to feed on your blood, and most people want to get rid of the bugs in their homes as quickly as possible.

Bedbugs in a commercial property are a serious threat to business. Nothing clears a hotel quite as quickly as news of a bed bug infestation

Who can get bedbugs?

Whilst bed bugs are most frequently found in multi-occupancy buildings, especially where there is a high turnover of occupants, such as in hotels or holiday flats, they can also be found in domestic houses.

It is possible for bedbugs ‘hitch a ride’ in suitcase or items of furniture. If you think you have bed bugs, there is no need to feel embarrassed as they can be found in the cleanest of homes.

Have I got bedbugs?

Bedbugs leave red irritating bite sites mostly on the upper bodies of their victims. Unlike mosquito or flea bites, bedbug bites often draw blood, and you or your guests may find traces of blood on your sheets in the morning.

Evidence of bedbug activity can be found on the bed itself. Bedbugs leave clusters of tiny (1mm in diameter) dark spots on the bedframe and mattress edges.

Sometimes the insects themselves can be seen though they normally hide in tiny cracks in the furniture and come out at night to feed.

How do I treat bedbugs?

Whilst it is possible to help prevent an infestation by taking some precautions, it is not possible to effectively treat a bedbug infestation by yourself.

You need help. Both to confirm that bedbugs are indeed causing the problem, and to eradicate them from your property. Make sure you choose an professional pest control contractor with plenty of experience in dealing with bedbug infestations.
